Training Milestone: 75 miles in one month!

Hello! So, it has been a really long time since I posted. I know, I'm way behind. I'm still working on catching up with what we've been up to since January, but I wanted to post about a running milestone I reached today.

When Don and I first started dating, I had never run more than 3 miles. I hated running. It was painful and to me, pointless. If there wasn't a reason (like a game where running was required), running was not on my list of fun things to do. When we started dating, I decided to run the Bolder Boulder 10k since we were going to travel to CO with a bunch of friends for the race. Despite my deep-seated hatred for running, I really enjoyed the race and ran with my great friend, Mary, relatively frequently the rest of the time we lived in Provo.

Strangely enough, the only year since knowing Don that I didn't run the Bolder Boulder, was when I actually lived in Boulder. We traveled long distances (drove 15 hours from Tucson one year) to run it the other 4 years, but last year, which was going to be my 5th BB, I had Sam 10 days before the race. I was due the day after, so I had a great plan. I was going to walk it with a t-shirt that would say, "I'm due tomorrow!" It probably wasn't a good idea, so it was best I had Sam before, because otherwise, I'm sure I would have done it! I was just too excited about it. It was probably divine intervention. If I'd done it, Sam may have been born on the course.

This year, I set a goal to run a half marathon. I still don't know if I'm cut out to run a marathon, but I thought a half may be feasible. We'll see how I feel after the race. Maybe I'll love it and forever be a crazy runner. Maybe I'll hate it and never do anything more than a 10k. I'll let you know after April 17th (race day).

I started officially training for the Salt Lake Half Marathon on January 25th. Today, I completed my 32nd training run and have run 75 miles during the month of March. I've run a total of 121 miles thus far during my 9 weeks of training and probably more than 150 since I had Sam in May. On Saturday, I ran 8 miles, which is the furthest I've ever run. Previously, I'd only run a little more than 6 miles and I'd only ever done that about 6 times. This Saturday, I am running a 10k distance and it seems like no big deal! Amazing! I never thought I'd think that 6 miles was an easy run!

Thanks are in order for my awesome husband who spends his lunch hour hanging out with Sam so I can get out and run. He keeps me on track, encourages me, and and gets me out the door and on the trail each day.

Anyway, watch this space for news about the race. I don't care how fast I do it; I just want to run the entire time. Wish me luck!

I admire you for wanting to start running and actually taking steps so you could achieve your goal. I'm still stuck in the mindset of "but it's pointless to run and it hurts because I already have breathing problems . . . " Lame, I know, but maybe this post will inspire me!

Woohoo! I'm so excited for you and secretly jealous that you're doing it without me. :) Can you guys come over for dinner or something while you're here?

p.s. the "word verification" is "wistedli". Sounds like a great word that I should probably integrate into my vocabulary...now to make up a definition

Wow! Awesome job! I personally think running is the best way to stay in shape and to clear your mind. Good luck with the half!

That's amazing - congratulations! I completely understand the 'deep-seated hatred'....I tend to enjoy biking or hiking more, but I'm afraid my rear will guilt me into it soon. :)
