Don and his friend, Tony (a friend from school), rode to the top of Mt. Evans, which one of 53 peaks over 14,000 feet in Colorado. Mt. Evans, which is 14, 267 feet tall, has a road that goes all the way to the top. Don trained all summer to be able to ride it.
He said he felt great and didn't really notice the oxygen decreasing as he increased elevation when he was breathing, he just felt weaker in the legs because his muscles didn't have as much oxygen as they did previously.
They rode from Idaho Springs (elevation: 7524 feet) to the top, making the total elevation gain 6, 743 feet BY BIKE!! It took them 2 hours 45 minutes total. Professional racers do it in 2 hours. Is that not insane!?
Anyway, here are some pictures. What a fabulously fit husband I have!
Tony, cruising down the road.
Pedaling, pedaling...
Don...
Taking a quick break at Bear Lake
Now high above Bear Lake...
Tony fixing a flat.
Tony and Don with the sign at the summit. You can see how high above tree line they are at this point.
High in the tundra. You can see the road they rode up winding all the way down.
After racing past cars (yes, the ride faster than the cars drive down the road. Thinking about this really freaks me out), Don and Tony proudly stand by the road sign at the bottom. What an accomplishment!
